Another name post

Well, if you're reading this, you already know that our blog has a new name...and necessarily so!  Once we knew that Caroline was a girl, we knew we'd have to change the name of the blog since we have more than one "she".  But it took this long to think up a new name and actually make the change.

Some of the takes will be shorter than others, but I can promise there will be lots of pictures of my little Strauberries here at Strauberry Short-takes!

The Name Story

Last fall when we learned that we were going to have a baby, it didn't take long to start thinking of names.  Of course, at that point, we didn't know if it was a boy or a girl.  So we tossed around names for either.

For a boy we quickly decided on Samuel.  It was a name that was in the running when we were expecting Cade, so that was a pretty easy choice.  We couldn't agree on a middle name, though, so it's good that we didn't have a boy!  Since the time when we were considering the name for Cade, I had wanted Haddon (after Spurgeon, of course)...and still did.  But now Stephen wanted Patrick (after Patrick Henry) instead.

I distinctly remember telling Stephen that if it was a girl, we should make Grace part of her name because, of course, it was God's grace that He would grant us another child.  But also, we would be in great need of His grace as we raise her.

Stephen wasn't sold on it as he preferred less popular names.  It wasn't long before we both agreed on Caroline for the first name.  I'm not really sure where it came from, but we both liked it.  We went around and around on a middle name for months and couldn't decide.  The two finalists were Grace and Elaine.  In the end, Elaine won the day.

Elaine was chosen for my mom - it's her middle name.  She's a SuperMom in my book, and for nine years I've been trying to live up to her example.  We wanted to honor her by carrying on her name.

Now, the interesting part...

Truly, Caroline was chosen because we like the name (I honestly can't even remember how we came up with it).  It did so happen that Stephen's mom's middle name is Carol, and his grandfather and great-grandfather both bore the middle name Caro.  So there is some family history of similar names, but no Caroline.

However, after our Caroline was born, we learned that when Stephen's mother was born, her parents were trying to decide whether to give her the name Caroline as a first name or Carol as a middle name.  The latter won out, but her mother told her that she should someday give her own daughter the name Caroline. And she intended to.

But no daughters were born to her - instead, she had four sons.

So she was quite shocked - and elated - when we announced that our daughter was named Caroline.  It took a lot more years than she would have ever guessed, but there is finally a Caroline in the family!

Luke-alikes?

Lots of people ask who the baby looks like, right?  I'm not always sure what the answer is because they all have similarities and differences.

If you've been reading for a long time, you might remember when I posted this after Elsa was born a few years ago. She looked remarkably like Luke.  Here are the pictures again:

Luke...

...and Elsa...

Now Caroline...

I think she looks a lot like Luke and Elsa, and I really didn't think any of them look too much like Cade.  But now that I pulled up these pictures of Cade, I do see a slight resemblance there, especially in the first picture of Cade.

What do you think?  Caroline certainly has a lot more hair than the others, and it's darker too.  Her eyes seem to be darker too.  At least, I think so.  Stephen seems to think they will be blue after all, though I've been hoping for a brown-eyed one.  Ah well, it's all just in fun anyway...I just love looking back at their baby pictures.

To BW or not to BW...or to BW?

When Luke was born nine years ago, I knew nothing of scheduling babies.  By the time Cade was born, I had heard of Baby-Wise, but I didn't really want anything to do with it as I'd read many different criticisms of the author.  So I was flying by the seat of my pants.

Luke didn't have a routine until he was about seven or eight months old, though he slept through the night consistently from eight weeks.  He just slept in his bouncy seat or the swing or the carseat when he was tired.  I fed him every few hours, and he did just fine.  I was doing fine too after he was sleeping through the night.

Cade had no routine either and often slept in the swing.  He was a tough one to get to sleep at night, but he did sleep through the night consistently from ten weeks old.  His routine started when we were spending the summer in Arizona (yes, we drove across the country from PA to AZ with a three year old and a four month old; yes, we were crazy!) and I spent the day at home pretty much all day, every day.  His routine at that point consisted of a nap in the car while driving Daddy to work, a morning nap, an afternoon nap, and a quick cat nap in the car while picking Daddy up from work.  It worked.  And he thrived (seriously, he was 23 pounds at the age of 5 months...and I was practically wasting away!).

When Elsa came along, it seemed like everybody I knew was "doing Baby-Wise" and I figured that I would too...at least, after the first few weeks.  But I hated the idea of her crying to go down for a nap.  And I did let her sometimes, but I was SO THANKFUL when she found her thumb around three months.  Although she slept through the night even earlier than the boys - 7 weeks, I think - she was a fabulous sleeper after she took control of her thumb.  But BW stressed me out, at least at the beginning.  I was so hung up on times and not sticking to the routine.

So this time I decided that I was just going to go with the flow and forget about BW and TRY to enjoy these early months (I am so NOT a newborn-person and would much prefer to start off at 6 months or so!!).  Well, that lasted about two weeks before I decided that I couldn't hold the baby all the time, and I couldn't nurse her 24/7 either.  And once school starts in the fall, I will very much need her to be taking regular naps in her bed!

So, enter Baby Whisperer.  I had read one of the Baby Whisperer books when Elsa was a baby, but to me it seemed so complicated and fussy that I just returned it to the library and never gave it another thought.

Turns out that this time I decided to give it another shot.  And it's been much more helpful this go-round.

Sure, we're not on the 3-hour routine right now, but we just can't get there yet.  Caroline has been sleeping long stretches at night - six plus hours sometimes - for the last week, and I don't feel comfortable letting her go three hours between feedings all day at this point.  We still need to get those 8 or 9 feedings in!  When we go for her one-month visit on Monday, we'll see what her weight is and see if we need to start waking her earlier during the night.  I remember when Luke started sleeping six hours before one month and I asked the pediatrician if I should be waking him, he laughed and said, "Are you kidding?  I have parents who would kill for six hours of sleep!"  But he was gaining well, and we had no worries.  We'll have to see how Caroline is doing on her weight gain.

Anyway, the four S routine at naptime seems to be working pretty well, and although I'm tired-to-death of shush-patting, it's working.  And I realized that it's helping me to know my baby better.  I'm seeing patterns in her wind-down before sleeping, and it's so encouraging to feel like I know what to do next to help her learn to sleep on her own.

It's kind of funny because even though I've seen her patterns a number of times, I continue to doubt that she'll follow it again "this time."  She almost always is frantic at first when I swaddle her and sit with her.  But then she calms and when I put her down, she stays calm for a while, just looking around. But then...just before she's ready to "let go"...she starts wailing and flailing (or trying to flail inside the swaddle), and I'm SO tempted to pick her up.  Ok, sometimes I do because I'm doubting that she will work through it and nod off.  But even if I do pick her up and start patting a little quicker and shushing a little louder, she soon calms and I put her down again.  She goes into a deep sleep within a minute or two.  And if I don't pick her up, I just pat a bit quicker and shush louder and closer to her, and she calms, gives two little sighs and heads off to dreamland.

Wow.  Just the fact that I've been able to observe all of that and get to know her better amazes me.  I'm not thrilled that the whole process takes 15-20 minutes most of the time...or 45 minutes last evening (but I persisted and she went to sleep! I felt like it was a major coup!), but it's working.

Still, I hope she finds her thumb in another month or two...and I will be done with having to "shush" until I'm parched!!

For far-away friends

Several far-away friends have sent us gifts, so I thought I'd post a few pictures of the outfits we received as they aren't here to see them in person.

These are for AS in AZ:

Apparently she's not a fan of playing in the
laundry basket yet...

She's been more smiley lately, but I
haven't quite captured one yet. This was close.

Although the outfit was originally sent for Elsa when she was a baby, it has turned out to fit Caroline better with the seasonal differences - and size differences in the two babies!  Thanks, Aunt Adela! Yes, we still call you that. :-)

And this one is for TM in PA:

We got a whole box full of adorable outfits in the mail last week, and Caroline is now starting to wear some of them. Thank you, T!

And there are some here just because I think my kids are cute and I'm sure you do too. ;-)

My crew

A rare one of Cade holding her; he just doesn't
ask to hold her like Luke does.

Sleepy time!

Oh, Cade finally reached "big boy" status this week when he lost his first tooth!  We thought for a while that he had swallowed it as it came out while he was chowing down on an apple for his afternoon snack.  But it turns out that it just dropped on the floor amongst the toys, and he later found it.

Hanging up the cleats...

...until next year.

Baseball ends tonight.  And I must say, I'm glad.  This has been a challenging year for us between being pregnant and now having a newborn.  I do enjoy watching the boys play, but I have never really enjoyed the nights of PB&J for dinner (4 nights a week!). So I am glad they are hanging up their cleats now.

Both boys were chosen for the Special Game in their respective levels this year.  Luke has been chosen every year, so it wasn't such a big deal for him.  But this was Cade's first year to play in the Special Game with players from other teams, and he was very excited.

I got a few pictures of Luke's game, but it was tough balancing the camera with the zoom lens attached while holding a nursing baby.  Sooooo...there are just a few as Stephen's train was running late and he missed much of the game.

He did arrive in time for most all of Cade's game, so he was able to take a few more pictures of that one.

Luke played 3rd baseman.

This boy runs like a gazelle!

Cade is second from the right.

He played 2nd baseman.

He's a speedster, too!

Our Young Chemist

Because one day I allowed her to "cook" while I was working in the kitchen, she thinks she should be allowed to "cook" everyday.  Finally, I gave in to her begging the other day.

Here's her concoction, including any and all of the unused herbs and spices on the spice rack...

It was blue here, but by the time she was done,
it was brown.  And believe it or not, one of her
brothers actually tasted it and said, "It's
not bad."  He wanted me to taste it, too.
NO WAY!

I'm sure she will be tickled pink that we will be studying chemistry this fall...no matter that she won't be school-age for another two years.  She's sure to get in on the action!

These days...

...won't last forever.

These days...are often difficult ones with little sleep.

But these days...will be gone so quickly.

These days...are the ones I will, in a few months or years, have a hard time believing are gone.

These days...are precious ones...days to cherish.

I'm sure I've referenced the Making Home blog before, but I'm going to do it again.  This is one of my most favorite blogs, and today's post proves why it's so high on my list.

I needed this perspective today.

First Farmers' Market

One of our favorite things to do on a Saturday morning is to head down to the local farmers' market for some fresh produce.  Today we introduced Caroline to the fun!  Of course, she slept through it all, but we still enjoyed it.

a rarely-offered smile for the camera

Elsa is running off some energy before getting
in the car to go home.

Cade is done running.

And just because...

Caroline's birthday teacup from Grandma

This guy does a FANTASTIC job of taking
care of his baby sister!  He loves to hold her,
and he will sit beside her and put the binky back
into her mouth countless times.
So thankful for him!!
(Now if I could just teach him the proper way
to fold laundry!)
