At the last minute, we decided to make today a field trip day. It's our last day before school begins for us next week, and I thought it would be fun to take the kids downtown and check out some museums.
Since the commuter trains have been abominably late in recent weeks, Stephen has accumulated a number of free passes - which means I don't have to buy a pass, and the kids all ride free!
Because the last morning train leaves here at 8am, we were in DC a bit earlier than necessary since the museums open at 10am. But we took the opportunity to walk around the Capitol.
The boys especially loved the pool in front of the Capitol where there are loads of ducks. Unfortunately, there is also loads of duck-yuck, and at least one little boy managed to get into it twice! Double yuck!
With plenty of time until the museum opened, we spent a little while in front of the Capitol steps checking out the fountain there. The boys threw in some pennies, and we ate our sandwiches (really early! but I thought they'd be happier with full tummies once we were inside the museums).
I let Curly out of her stroller, and she had a blast running around for a short while.
We had planned to visit the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, but they practically begged me to visit the National Museum of Native Americans instead. So we did. There was a live performance going on outside the entrance when we arrived, and that was fascinating. Boo-Boo asked if I could get him one of those drum-things. Ummmm, NO. Pay to have more noise in the house??
I don't think so.
Unfortunately, that museum wasn't as enthralling as they thought it would be. I'm pretty sure they were looking for cowboys & indians-type stuff. But they did enjoy seeing the arrowheads and the guns on display.
We did head into the Air & Space museum for a little while then. We especially liked the exhibit on the planets. We'll be studying astronomy in science this year, so it was neat to get a little headstart and see those displays.
And then by 1pm, it was time to hop on the train and head home again so a certain little girl could take her nap.
