Leap Year Tradition

Friday will mark the 7th anniversary of a Straub family tradition celebrated each Leap Year.

My husband's family began this unusual tradition in 1980 when dining out - a very rare occasion for the family in those years - at a local, family-run restaurant. The boys were enjoying this unusual treat quite a lot, and Dad promised that he would bring them back there for dinner every February 29th. They, of course, were too young to realize that it would be four more years before the next time February would have 29 days. But, true to his word, they all returned four years later. Dad reminded them of the promise, and a family tradition was begun.

Over the years, more family members have been added, starting with a younger brother, and later wives and grandchildren. Dad is no longer with us, gone onto glory eight years ago. And others have missed the family dinner over the years due to circumstances that kept them away. The celebration hasn't always been held at the same restaurant because of the restaurant schedule and changes in management - although one year the restaurant opened their doors just for the family's dinner celebration, even on a day they were normally closed. But the tradition continues.

As Leap Year 2008 approaches, we are excited about sharing this celebration with new family members. We will, Lord-willing, all travel to that same restaurant where it all began 28 years ago and remember where we've been over the last four years...and wonder where we'll be in four more.

Another First

Today as I put Boo-Boo down for his afternoon nap, I said, as usual, "Kisses for Mommy." And he obliged with a quick kiss. And to my amazement, he followed up with a Butterfly Kiss on my cheek! How sweet!! I only started giving Butterfly Kisses a week or two ago, but he thinks it's hilarious. He was quite excited that he was able to give a Butterfly Kiss too. Now he's waiting to show Daddy when he comes home tonight. These are the sweet moments we cherish!!

First Official Haircut

Daddy and Mr. Blue-Eyes were going for haircuts, so Boo-Boo got his first real haircut too. Mommy has cut it up until now (and I thought I had done a decent job of it until Daddy said Boo-Boo needed a real haircut! Hmmmph!). As you can see from his woeful expression, Boo-Boo didn't really enjoy it. He tried to pull the cape off at one point. We did manage to get through it without any tears or screaming, so overall it was a success.

A Weekend in the Country

The boys enjoyed a walk in the woods - or rather a sled-ride through the woods - over the weekend. Uncle Dan had put out corn for the turkeys the night before, so we trekked in to try to catch a glimpse of the turkeys feeding. The snow, however, was frozen and crunchy. So the turkeys heard us coming and we only caught a glimpse of them shuffling away through the trees. But the boys enjoyed getting out into the fresh air. Mr. Blue-Eyes walked with no problem, but Boo-Boo was pulled on the sled or carried most of the way. I suppose waddling like the Abominable Snowman was tiresome for him.

Back in the Land of the Living

Well, it has been one rough week.

Last Wednesday morning, Mr. Blue-Eyes came down with a fever, so I knew we were in for a rough couple of days. Little did I know... Boo-Boo had caught the bug by the next morning. Soon I was feeling a little rough, and when Stephen got home from work on Friday night, he had it too. By Sunday, we were barely functional, so my mom came to help for a few days.

After a trip to the pediatrician and the pharmacy, both boys are feeling better and have their ear infections under control. Stephen hasn't missed any work, and although I think I might cough up a lung soon, I think we're back to semi-normal around here...it's only taken a week. So Mom has gone home and we are fending for ourselves again, but I think we'll manage.

Unfortunately, this has thrown a wretched kink into our potty-training. Boo-Boo was doing quite well, but for the past week, it's been nothing but diapers for him. We have some make-up work to do, I guess.

A Funny One

The boys thought this was really funny today. It was just good to hear them laughing again...see following post.
