One Smart Cookie...er, Cupcake

She's staying in her bed!  Hooray!

She hasn't fallen out even once.  All of her animals and dolls and blankets have ended up on the floor just about every single night, but she's stayed in bed.  She keeps waking up because she's cold, usually around 4-5am.  And I have to tuck her in again.  (Yes, I admit that it took me nearly a week to figure out that I should tuck her blanket underneath the sides of the mattress - duh!)  Now, hopefully tonight she'll stay warm...and I won't have to get up...because I'm tired enough as it is!

I actually told her a day or so ago that when her blankets and favorite turtle fall out of her bed, she is allowed to reach down and pull them back into bed (the rule is that she's not allowed out of bed when the door is closed).  She, with a straight face, looked at me and said very sensibly, "Or I can just cry and you can come over and put them back in my bed."  Genius.

The girl can be quite independent-minded, though.  Just last night  after I was in bed resting and the kids were playing upstairs, she decided that she needed a drink. Without a word to anyone, she went downstairs and by stacking two stools on top of one another - YES, really - she climbed up onto the counter and got a cup out of the cabinet, got back down and proceeded to fill her cup with water from the fridge dispenser and bring it back up - mostly without spilling - for me to put the lid on it.

When she explained how she got this cup full of water, I didn't know whether to laugh or to cry. The thought of her climbing onto two small stools stacked high enough to get onto the counter made me want to cry.  But the fact that she was resourceful enough to figure it out on her own made me kind of proud of her...in a scary, laughable way.

So I laughed.  And I admit there were a few tears too.

Hey, I'm pregnant.  Gimme a break.

*** Update ***  Cupcake is now insisting that she never stacked two stools on top of each other.  Just side by side. Not sure how that was helpful, but that's her story.  It's rather a relief to know that she wasn't that daring, but it doesn't quite make as good a story, I know.

I talked to Cupcake during the discipleship hour this AM and I asked about her sleeping arrangements. Specifically, I asked if she slept in a crib or in a big bed that she can climb into and get out of on her own. She looked at me, puzzled, and then answered, "I don't sleep in a crib, but I can't get out of my bed without Mommy." She forgot to mention this escapade into the kitchen. =)
